The c15 glass of the east window of the Savile Chapel at Thornhill is a rare depiction of the Heavenly City. Now in an advanced state of deterioration, it was recorded in careful detail by its c19 restorers. A multidisciplinary collaboration has resulted in the decision to create a replica window and display elements of the ancient glass within the Savile Chapel.
This conference, bringing together glass science, art history and conservation, aims to examine the how and why of this uniquely fascinating project, and promote informed debate.
