Giving to Thornhill Parish Church

* see our sub page to look at what our churches raise for others

We have a friendly church family and a warm and well-ordered church.

It costs us  £230 per day to serve God and the local community. We do not receive any financial support direct from the Government for our day to day running costs.. We would like to worship God and extend our support to everyone living in Thornhill. We are careful to keep any major building work separately funded  mainly by grants from other organisations , some of whom are funded from taxation or the National Lottery. Much work has been done to bring the building up to date in terms of Disabled Access and  Facilities as well as major Fabric repairs. We launch special appeals for major work, but need your regular support to help us cover our day-to-day costs.

Why we need so much money for day-to-day costs

As a church we want to be free to use our funds in the best possible way to enable our mission and ministry in Thornhill to flourish This includes caring for our biggest   physical resource – the Church itself – as a place of worship and prayer, and as a place people come to for events and activities as well as for groups and organisations . It also includes heating and lighting and our contribution to the Parish Share. We work hard to keep our spending down, with annual reviews of energy and maintenance costs, seeking competitive quotes for work undertaken, and challenging ourselves in our ways of working to avoid waste.  Our costs are kept down dramatically by all the work done by our congregation and others in the community free of charge.

How much should I give ?

Many people ask “How much should I be giving?”  We do not want to be prescriptive – there is no membership or access fee. We ask people to give what they decide that they can afford.

The Church of England has always encouraged people to give 10% of their income away: 5% to the church and 5% to their chosen charities, and we support and encourage this approach. The table below gives a model of how much you might want to give in relation to your income. If you also Gift Aid your contribution (an option available to all UK tax payers) we can claim an additional  25p from the Government in every pound you give.

Weekly Net Income:

All giving to the church is managed by our Parish Gift Aid Officer and what you give kept confidential.

  What is the Parish Share?

The Parish Share is our contribution towards the running of our Diocese of Leeds , and is the traditional way the Anglican Church has always funded ministry. In return for our share, we receive the funding for a full time Priest . We also receive legal support and advice and training for our Readers and colleagues.  Payment is also about our social responsibility to support the wider work of the church nationally .  Bearing in mind the fact that one full time priest costs the Diocese £60,000 per annum for Salary, Pension and Training  and  given that our Share payment is around £36,000 for 2018, we clearly make a strong net gain in Thornhill from our financial contribution to the Diocese.

 How to give:

The most convenient way for us to receive a regular donation is by standing order.  This  allows  us to predict our income and   helps us to know what we have available to spend and so budget more effectively. If you would like give to the work of the Thornhill Parish Church via standing order click here to download a standing order form. Please complete the form and send it to your bank or use the details to set up a standing order by phone or online with your bank.  Please tell us you have done this and fill in a Gift Aid form if you wish here. You can also give using our envelope scheme or by putting cash on the collection plate at any service. If you give by standing order there are ‘gifting cards’ available at the back of church to symbolise your offering which can be put on the collection plate each week.

 Legacy and Wills

The Church has been remembered by many generous benefactors in the past. Why not consider leaving the Church something in your Will today, and set up a legacy?
