Our activities

Bellringing

The church has a fine peal of 8 bells with teams from elsewhere often coming to ring at evenings or weekends. Our team at Thornhill are always on the lookout for new members – no experience necessary! Practice is on Wednesday evenings at 7.30. We ring before the 9.30 service each Sunday, and at special services and weddings by arrangement. For further information -  contact Tony Ridley 01924 465329

  Buggy Praise

This is a very informal group for pre-school children and whoever they bring with them! We meet in church on the first and third Tuesdays of each month during term time. It is a time of story, songs and praise with tea / coffee/ juice / biscuits / fruit available for all. We begin to gather from 10 a.m. and it’s a case of ‘come when you can and go when you must’! Toys and teddies, books and beanies, cuddles and carpet………and heaps more. We also hold picnics three times a year (Easter; Teddy Bears’ Picnic in the summer; Nativity at Christmas).  For further information contact the Rector

Choir

We have a  small robed choir at our 9.30 Eucharist; their singing as the rest of the congregation receives communion being particularly appreciated. They also sing at weddings if requested and support several special services throughout the year. New members are most welcome!

Church Cleaning        A beautiful building like this cannot be maintained without a dedicated band of cleaners. We have a rota system of people working in pairs. All cleaning materials are provided and no experience is necessary! We generally clean on Friday mornings, although times may vary according to the use of the building.

Crafts Group

We are a friendly and informal group who meet twice a month on alternate Tuesday evenings, making a variety of handcrafted items for sale within the church and at local craft fairs. Over the years we have raised significant funds for the church whilst our members enjoy the fellowship and company of the evenings together. Items are also made for needy children in an orphanage in Romania or to support local and national appeals. You don’t have to be an expert – whatever you level of skill a task will be found for you!

Environment

As a church we are trying to become more environmentally aware in terms of recycling, eco-friendly products and energy-saving. We try to raise awareness of our duty of stewardship of God’s world and have even handed out packs to put in your cisterns to save water when you flush!

Mothers' Union  a thriving group within the church -  Meets on the Second wednesday of each month - usually at The Rectory.Welcome to the Mothers' Union.
The Mothers' Union is a Christian organisation with more than three and a half million members worldwide. Though our lives and our experience of the MU may differ widely depending on where we are, we are all joined together by our shared belief in the importance of the family.

The backbone of the MU is our worldwide network of volunteers. Whatever their individual backgrounds, our members are joined together by a commitment to the family. Volunteers give their time unstintingly to help others, whether by running local projects, supporting international campaigns, or fundraising.

Welcome to Girlguiding UK!

Guiding is a game - with a purpose. It provides opportunities for girls and young women to be challenged by new adventures and experiences and achieve a sense of pride in accomplishment. Guiding also teaches them to understand and learn about the world, its people and cultures

 Schools

We are always delighted to have visits from schools and are fortunate in our links with the three schools within the parish boundary, as well as with Ravenshall School in Dewsbury. We seek to make each visit unique and tailored to the needs of the visiting group. In order to do this we invite staff input as to aims and outcomes required, thus hopefully avoiding the ‘museum-style tour’ and creating a relevant and enjoyable experience for all of us.

We have particularly close links with our Church School at Overthorpe, and are pleased to welcome staff and children to the church for services and visits. Our Foundation Governors seek to support the running of the school through their roles on the governing body as well as in fundraising, concerts and events, and prayer. The clergy regularly take Collective Worship, and support R.E lessons as and when required. The Chair of Governors is a member of the congregation and this helps to raise awareness of the general congregation with regard to events and issues which affect the school. The opening of the Children’s Centre means that prospects for even closer links with more families in the community is a welcome opportunity. SEE SEPERATE PAGE

We are also pleased to have close links with Thornhill J&I through support in lessons, end of term Collective Worship and the music they have been generous in offering to us. The Head Teacher has taken part in Education Sunday with us, sharing her ideas and personal thoughts with relation to education and faith.

We are also pleased to be developing links with the Community Science College @ Thornhill. These currently take the form of membership of the governing body, Fairtrade stall in the library, links with the Art Department and a general two-way welcome between church and school. Once again, the Head Teacher has taken part in Education Sunday in church, and the Dance Club has been a part of our Concert Season. The Humanities Department also makes use of our churchyard for teaching local and social history.
